SVSCLUB

Suguna Vilasa Sabha Founded on July 1, 1891

The Suguna vilasa sabha is a club founded by a group of patriotic men headed by the late Sambandha Mudaliyar for the promotion of theatrical talent in the year 1891.

It is also called as the SVS club which is one of the historical theatre companies in Chennai. The SVS club has certain principles like its members must be men and they were to be University graduates. The stage plays featured the senate house to indicate the educational status of the members.

All the female characters were enacted by men. Rao Bahadur Pammal Sambandha Mudaliyar was the master spirit in leading them all. By profession, he was a lawyer but under the club’s patronage, he had to emerge as a scriptwriter and became popular and well known. He wrote 94 plays during his forever association with the SVS besides translating several plays from other languages.

There was a say that if anyone wanted to be a judge, he needed to be a member of SVS club. At that time, many members in the club were from various legal alliances. Pammal Sambandha Mudaliyar became a judge of the small cause’s court. At first, VP hall was the club’s venue where the SVS produced new innovations and proposals. The introduction of an intermission in Tamil plays, organizing the first event of fancy dress competition for Indians…the list is boundless.
